Dating the Great Divergence

چکیده
Abstract New data on Dutch and British GDP/capita show that at no time prior to 1750, perhaps not before 1800, did the leading countries of northwestern Europe enjoy sustained strong growth in GDP/capita. Such income per head as occur was highly episodic, concentrated a few decades then followed by long periods stagnation head. Moreover, 1800 economies reach levels capita much different from peak achieved hundreds years earlier most developed regions Italy China. When Industrial Revolution began Britain, it preceded patterns pre-modern were any way remarkable, neither real incomes nor exceptional The Great Divergence, seen onset increases despite population growth, achievement beyond peaks, late occurrence, arising only 1800.

Dating divergence of Polystigma and other Sordariomycetes
Studies on the evolutionary history of ascomycetes in terms of time scale will help to understand historical patterns that shape their biodiversity. Until now most of dating studies of ascomycetes have focused on major events in fungal evolution but not on divergence events within smaller groups of fungi e.g. within Sordariomycetes. We used molecular dating to estimate the time of separation of...

متن کاملThe Fossil Calibration Database-A New Resource for Divergence Dating.
Fossils provide the principal basis for temporal calibrations, which are critical to the accuracy of divergence dating analyses. Translating fossil data into minimum and maximum bounds for calibrations is the most important-often least appreciated-step of divergence dating. Properly justified calibrations require the synthesis of phylogenetic, paleontological, and geological evidence and can be...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Technology Diffusion and the Great Divergence
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY New technologies disseminate increasingly rapidly from rich to poor countries but poor countries struggle to employ these technologies with the same degree of intensity and versatility. This suggests that the potential for technological leap-frogging is over-hyped. The challenge for poor countries is to invest in the right kinds of knowledge so that imported technologies can b...
متن کاملTrade and the Great Divergence: The Family Connection
This research argues that the rapid expansion of international trade in the second phase of the industrial revolution has played a major role in the timing of demographic transitions across countries and has thereby been a significant determinant of the distribution of world population and a prime cause of the ‘Great Divergence’ in income per capita across countries in the last two centuries. T...
